I watched a video years ago on the same kind of experiment using fruit flies. The investigators set up perfect environments for the flies, with plenty of food and water, clean air, and they monitored the locations regularly for diseases. No matter what they did, the populations grew rapidly, then stopped reproducing and eventually died out, with no observable reason. Just like this experiment.
