The key phrase in your comment was “in my mind”. For millions of non-discerning Americans jingoistic appeals to loyalty and adoration means that the entity (cops, military troops, religious leaders, the US itself) can do no wrong. This leads to the inability to have reasonable discussions about how to stop and prevent bad things, or changes that could make things better.
