Remember that in 1972 only a few scientists were truly concerned about global warming. The economic indicators mentioned in the article do not appear include the effects of the climate catastrophe that is coming our way.

Sorry, that scenario works in theory only. But let us be realistic. We are doing very little to create the results of this scenario. Some electric cars, some reduction in coal emissions, a few governmental edicts to reduce pollution and save energy. But CO2 levels are continuing to rise every year. And we haven't even fully factored in the massive increase in methane coming from melting permafrost and frozen lakes. The doomsday scenarios are much more realistic - even without AGW. Including climate, it is almost inevitably doom that we face.

The really sad part is that the solutions to our problems are available, it doesn't have to be this way. But, as the article specifies, these solutions will require changes in human behavior. Our history is not positive about this happening.
