This is not new. It has been going on since the beginning of public media. Mae West, Marilyn Monroe, Bridgett Bardot, then Cher, Tina Turner, MTV. reality shows. Don't forget how 50s-60s women were required to be fashionable and pretty for their husbands. While these were focused on women (except for Lolita), these are the ideals that teen girls aspired to. It has always been there, but it seems more intense now with the ability of social media to magnify everything, and seems more salacious due to our relaxed standards.
